Lennart Sand is one of our most established and appreciated wildlife artists and he can be found in the permanent collections at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, USA, Museum Nature in Art, England and National Museum of Wildlife Art, USA.

He has over the years illustrated many wildlife magazines and recurrent written nature causeries in the daily press. Besides that he has also written and illustrated many books of his own.

Lennart was born in Östersund in 1946 and resides in Dalecarlia.

The Journey Behind the Paintings

From Wilderness to Canvas

Travel has always been at the heart of my artistic journey. From the vast wilderness of Siberia to encounters with people, cultures, and landscapes around the world, every journey has left its mark on me and, in one way or another, found its way into my paintings.

What inspires me is not only the places themselves, but the experience of discovering something new. The endless silence of the Siberian tundra, the changing light across distant horizons, and the character of different cultures have all influenced the way I see and portray the world. These experiences have shaped my artistic expression, where nature, wildlife, and human stories often come together.

For me, travelling has never simply been about reaching a destination. It is about experiencing the world with curiosity and an open mind. Every journey brings new colours, emotions, impressions, and ideas that I carry with me back to the studio.

My paintings are not just depictions of places I have visited. They are reflections of memories and experiences — moments that have stayed with me and become part of my lifelong passion for nature, art, and exploration.

The First Impression

Every journey leaves behind impressions that can become art.

Through field studies across remote landscapes, moments are observed, colours are collected and memories are transformed into the first strokes on canvas.

The Importance of Painting Outdoors

Painting outdoors is essential to me because it allows me to observe nature directly. Being there in the moment helps me understand the light, the colors, and the way wildlife moves and behaves. This direct connection with nature allows me to create paintings that feel both authentic and expressive.

Beyond the Canvas

Although painting has always been at the heart of my work, sculpture has also played an important role in my artistic practice. Since the 1980s, I have created sculptures of birds and mammals, primarily in bronze, ranging from limited editions to public installations.

Working in three dimensions gives me another way to explore the character, movement and anatomy of wildlife. The same close observation of nature that shapes my paintings is reflected in my sculptures, where form and movement give each subject a distinct presence.

The Studio – Where Memories Become Colour

Some painting begins long before the first brushstroke. Sketches, observations, experiments and countless hours in the studio gradually evolve into finished works. This is where memories become colour and landscapes become emotion.
